Sandunga will both entertain and educate you. Sandunga, which means ‘‘happiness” in Spanish and some indigenous languages, was formed in Eugene in 19R1 by Armando Morales. Morales, who currently teaches Spanish at the University of Oregon, had two main objectives when he formed the group. "The goals of the group were to promote the music of Latin America and preserve the diverse tradition of music of Latin America," Morales said Morales said he believes that the diversity of music from Latin America has been under mined by the generic term "salsa” that was used to market tropical music in the United States in the late 1970’s. Craig Willis, a theater arts graduate student, is directing the play as his qualifying project for a Master of Fine Arts degree. Willis said one reason he chose the play was because he identified with the humorous inner turmoil of the characters. who plays the character Libby, said that the char acters are "people looking for common human links" and that Libby, as the hostess of the din ner party that the play revolves around, is the one who provides that connection and facilitates the relationships. Willis also chose the play for the challenge it presenttxi with the intricate timing of the dialog, ho said. A Los Angeles Drama Critic's Award winner for Best Play, "Blue Window" is acclaimed for weaving seemingly ordinary con versation into verbal music. "I was captured by the humor these characters show in an attempt to hide their pain," he said, and explained that their pain is due to their feelings of being isolated in society. Ann Swanson, a senior 1 ‘Blue Window1 Is funny because It's true.' Ann Swanson senior rhetoric and communication major Lucas writes in a style that is. at once, both natu ralistic and poetic." Willis said. He explained that the dia log overlapps and echoes because several scenes are performed simultaneously rhetonc and communication major who plays the character Alice, said the comedy is also about "how little we know aland the people close to us in our lives.” and how important it is to learn about one another. Her character has a lesbian relationship with Bixi and is insensitive to her partner’s feelings While doing her character research. Swanson said she realized that even though Alice is not a likable person, she is an empathetic character because her "insensitive qualities rise out of some low confidence in herself ” Because this is something many people can relate to, “the relationship itself is more impor tant than what kind of relationship it is." Swanson said As with most comedy. '"Blue Window' is funny because it's true," she added. Adrianna Dufay, a senior theater arts major before, during and after the seven characters attend the dinner party in New York City. "It's almost mimmalistic. It leaves open the possibility...that these people are existing in this common environment all at the same time," Willis said. Dufay described the effect as a "dialog orches tra. " “Bits and pieces of human experience come together to form a coherent whole. It's a sympho ny of human experience." she explained. The cast of "Blue Window" also includes Greg James, a junior theater arts major. Eric Ostlind. a senior English major. Heather Linn, a senior humanities major. Lori Ferraro, a senior theater arts major, and Carlos Gomez, a senior political science major.
